Group 1 and the service relationship: earn the next visit

By Tony Byrne · Vertex Automotive Solutions

The next vehicle sale may depend on a service conversation that nobody in the sales department ever sees.

The next vehicle sale may depend on a service conversation that nobody in the sales department ever sees.

Our July discussion of Group 1 and Daryl Kenningham focused on service as a central part of the ownership relationship. Deloitte’s public account of the conversation emphasised reduced friction and trust. The point is practical: repeated service interactions shape how a customer judges the whole business.

Vertex would be cautious about reducing that relationship to a projected lifetime value. The projection is only useful if the business understands what makes the next visit more or less likely. Unclear estimates, repeated explanations and missed updates can weaken confidence long before a replacement vehicle is considered.

The management response should join up the evidence. An unresolved service concern needs an owner. A sales team preparing a replacement conversation should know that concern exists and ensure it is handled appropriately, rather than approaching the customer as though the relationship is starting afresh.

Omnia’s proposed role is to support that continuity with relevant operational context and clear accountability. It should help employees understand the relationship without turning a forecast into a claim about what a customer will do.

Choose one customer journey from delivery through the most recent workshop visit. Identify the moments that earned another conversation. Those moments deserve as much management attention as the original transaction.
